A 466 carat Blue Sapphire from Ceylon is in a possession of a famous American Gem and Art Collector.

Blue Sapphire :
The Blue Sapphire is of the ‘cornflower blue' a flower that has a deep shade of blue with a velvety luster. The best Blue Sapphires to the world is given by Sri Lanka. This precious gem has a high clarity transparency and saturation of colour which is a hall mark of an excellent Blue Sapphire. The highest price ever paid for a blue sapphire was US$ 48,871.00 per carat for a stone of 62.02 carats in 2001. This precious stone was called “Rockfeller Sapphire”.

Rubies :
Ruby is one of the most expensive gems and it may be only second to diamond with rare colours. One can say that top quality Sri Lankan Rubies are quite rare and when found, they are highly esteemed and priced accordingly. The highest price ever paid for a ruby was US$ 227,301 per carat for a stone of 15.97 cts (total price of US$ 3,630,000) called “MOGOK RUBY” at Sotheby's New York in 1988.

Alexandrite :
This precious stone is perhaps the rarest and our Island is famous for producing larger stones
with fair colour change. The best from Sri Lanka is the grass green in daylight and violet red to raspberry red in incandescent light. When these gems are cut in en-cabochon shape, and polished it results in an unusual colour changing Alexndrite Cat's Eye.

Chrysoberyl :
This gem contains varying amount of colouring impurities resulting in various colours such as green, yellow, brown, brownish green etc. Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye is of a dark yellowish brown to paler shades of yellow with tints o f green. The honey yellow colour is considered the best with the strength and the effectiveness of the ray. Cat's Eye with a fine ray and honey colour would be prices similar to Blue Sapphire.

Spinel :
The name Spinel comes from the Greek word meaning ‘spark' alluding to its fiery colour. Sri Lankan Spinels range from ruby red, pink, orange, shades of reddish brown, purple, blue, bluish green, mauve, greenish black, black to colourless. The Red Spinel resembles Rubies and the blue spinel looks like a fine blue sapphire.

Colours of Garnets are – Dark deep red or crimson shade with tints of violet, with Brownish red or reddish brown to black stones, Pinkish red with a tint of violet, Yellowish-orange or aurora-red to a brownish shade, a Brownish yellow to brownish orange and also attractive colour changing stones of Brownish-green in day light to a violet red in the artificial light.
